Korean Classes with Shinhye Lee

Last Friday, I visited the Liem Tiet primary school in HaNam province with Better Life Vietnam (BLV), a children’s education charity that focuses on improving access to books in impoverished areas of Vietnam. We caught a bus from Hanoi university at 7 am and an hour and a half later, we arrived at the school. When we arrived, the school principal and teachers welcomed us and we got to know each other in a short tea break. Half the students had been taken outside to participate in activities that day, so while I waited for their return, I watched the other teachers teaching their lessons. It seemed like everyone was eager to learn! After the class ended it was lunchtime, which lasted about two hours. Then followed the afternoon classes and I was finally able to meet with the Vietnamese students. Some of them seemed a bit shy and some seemed very excited.

To begin my lesson, I taught them how to count numbers in Korean and how to introduce themselves with their name and age. Lastly, I taught them how to pronounce simple farmyard animals in Korean. Despite my worries, they managed to follow all the new Korean words really well and they enjoyed the game I had prepared. We had so much fun and it was rewarding to see them enjoying my class - I would definitely do it again. There were a variety of fun activities on offer at the school like dance, films , and games. The students looked happy and I could see a lot of smiles on their faces. Thank you for giving me this great opportunity. I am happy and appreciate being part of this charity as a Korean teacher.

지난주 금요일 저는 Better Life Vietnam과 함께 베트남 Ha Nam지방에 있는 Liem Tiet 초등학교에 갔습니다. BLV은 주로 시골이나 혜택을 받지 못하는 아이들을 찾아가 영어책을 나누어 주고 영어수업을 해주고 아이들을 위한 게임이나 활동 등을 제공하는 일을 주로 하는 단체입니다.

저는 한국인이기에 아이들에게 영어대신 한국어레슨을 하면 안되겠냐고 여쭈었고 처음으로 아이들에게 한국어를 가르친 봉사자가 되었습니다. 아침 7시쯤 저희는 하노이의 한 대학교 건물에서 만나 저를 포함한 영어교사 봉사자 3명과 20-30명 정도 되는 대학생들과 함께 버스를 타고 하노이에서 1시간 정도 떨어진 Liem Tiet 초등학교에 도착했습니다. 학교 교장선생님과 선생님들이 반갑게 맞이하여 주셨고 잠깐의 티타임을 가진 뒤에 바로 아이들을 만나러 갔습니다.

그날은 아이들 절반이 야외활동 중이어서 저는 오후에 수업을 하게 되었고 오전에는 다른 선생님의 수업을 지켜보았습니다. 11시30분쯤 베트남식의 도시락으로 점심식사를 하고 1-2시간 정도의 휴식시간을 가졌습니다. 다른 봉사자들과 함께 초등학교 주변을 둘러보고 휴식을 가진 뒤 초등학교로 돌아와 돌아다니는 아이들에게 인사를 건냈습니다. “안녕! 신짜오!” 아이들은 숙쓰러우면서도 호기심 어린 눈빛으로 저를 계속 쳐다보았고 몇 명은 그냥 도망가기도 하고 몇명은 무언가 말을 하려고 시도하기도 했습니다. 순수한 아이들의 모습이 참 예뻐보이더군요. 그렇게 바로 20명정도의 아이들과 함께 한국어 수업을 시작했습니다. 컴퓨터로 준비해가 PPT가 로딩시간이 길어져 준비되는 동안 아이들에게 숫자를 먼저 알려주었고 그 뒤에 동물에 대해 배워보았습니다.

잘 따라할까? 걱정에도 불구하고 “토끼, 강아지, 고양이, 돼지” 등 또박또박 잘 말하는 아이들이 신기하기도 하고 참 귀여웠어요. 그렇게 몇몇 단어를 배워본 뒤 20-30분 동안 게임을 했고 즐거워 하는 아이들의 모습을 보니 기쁘고 보람된 시간이었습니다. 그 뒤 게임과 댄스등의 활동들이 이어졌는데 아이들과 선생님들 모두 즐거워하는 모습에 저 또한 마음이 훈훈해 졌습니다. 봉사자들이 아이들을 위해 많이 준비했구나, 느껴 지기도 했고요. 너무나 좋은 경험을 하게 해주신 BLV!
